Medical Liability Considerations for Physicians

KMA has partnered with MagMutual to present a special one-hour virtual CME opportunity focusing on various aspects of medical liability. “Medical Liability Considerations for Physicians” will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 12-1 p.m. ET. Featured speakers will include Sarah Spurlock, Partner, Stites and Harbison, Scott Atkins, Regional Executive Officer, MagMutual, and Bill Kanich, M.D., JD, Chief Medical Officer, MagMutual.

Attendees will dive into the malpractice market and learn about affecting issues, including an overview of recent cases that impacted the medical liability climate. The program will also feature tips for avoiding or preparing for malpractice cases and the importance of cyber liability coverage.

Sarah Cronan Spurlock is a member of the firm’s Health Care Service Group and is Co-chair of the firm’s Privacy & Data Security Group.  Sarah regularly advises clients on a wide range of health care issues, including health information privacy and security laws and data breach prevention and response.  Her practice also includes regulatory and transactional health care law and health care litigation.  Sarah is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US).

Sarah joined Stites & Harbison in September of 2009 after participating in the firm’s summer associate program in 2008.  In the summer of 2007, she worked in the legal department at Brown-Forman Corporation in Louisville.  Before law school, Sarah lived in New York City where she worked at Friedman, Wang & Bleiberg, P.C. as a paralegal, and Lehman Brothers, Inc. in human resources supporting the information technology division.

Sarah is a volunteer for the Louisville Legal Aid Society.  She is also a member of the board of directors for Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Inc. and is an accomplished equestrian and enjoys riding American Saddlebred horses in her free time.

Scott Atkins joined MagMutual in July 2019 as Regional Executive Officer, bringing with him 25 years of experience in underwriting and business development within the healthcare liability industry.

His professional background includes 15 years at the West Virginia Mutual Insurance Company, most recently as vice president of underwriting & business development. His focus in that role included the oversight of all underwriting, policyholder service, and development operations. Prior to that, Scott worked for Acordia, where he served as a retail broker and MGA for healthcare professional liability programs.

In his role at MagMutual, Scott focuses on sales, strategic alliances, and retaining and developing client relationships in the Mideast region of the U.S.

Chief medical officer and the head of The Institute at MagMutual, Dr. Bill Kanich is a board-certified emergency medicine physician who practiced in Charleston, South Carolina, prior to moving to Atlanta. Bill functions as an advisor to other members of The Institute on medical matters. He also leads educational seminars for MagMutual Policy Owners. In addition to his work with The Institute, he has been a member of the MagMutual South Carolina Claims Committee for eight years.

Bill received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, his JD from the University of North Carolina, his MD from the Medical College of Virginia and completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Virginia.
