Symptoms, Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Sleep Disorders

Course Description:

This module will provide an in-depth discussion on various sleep disorders and treatments.

Statement of Need:

Up to 30% of the US population has reported transient insomnia with 10-30% deal with chronic insomnia.  Sleep disorders affect multiple health considerations.  Primary care physicians need to know when to refer patients for testing, follow-up diagnosis and treatment and options for resolving sleep-related issues.

Objectives:

At the end of this module physicians will be able to:

1).  Provide information related to common sleep disorders to improve understanding of symptoms, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment options.

2).  Provide information which clarifies differences between a baseline polysomnogram versus titration and a split night polysomnogram.

3).  Provide information to improve understanding of when to order a home sleep test and multiple sleep latency test.
