Are Social Media Trends Harming Your Heart? Find Out During the “Small STEPS, Big Impact” Campaign’s Newest CME Event!

On any given day across the social media sphere, “influencers” are selling their audiences on the idea of achieving better health through the sale of thousands of products, from energy drinks to supplements and vaping devices. However, while claiming health benefits, many can unknowingly be harmful, particularly to heart health. “Trending Toward Trouble: Popular Health Fads Harming Your Heart,” a two-part series sponsored by the Kentucky Medical Association and the Kentucky Foundation for Medical Care’s “Small STEPS, Big Impact” campaign, will examine popular health and wellness trends that are often perceived as beneficial but may pose unintended risks to cardiovascular health. Through an evidence-based lens, physicians will explore how emerging fads influence patient behavior, clinical outcomes, and population-level cardiovascular risk.

Dr. John P. Higgins is an academic cardiologist who combines research, teaching, and sports cardiology to advance heart health and athlete performance. At UT McGovern Medical School, he mentors future physicians as Professor of Medicine. He also serves as Senior Cardiologist at LBJ Hospital and directs Exercise Physiology at Memorial Hermann. He supports the Houston Rockets and Rice Athletics as their Sports Cardiologist.

Dr. Higgins has appeared over 800 times on local and national TV and radio, including CNN and ABC World News. He’s also a frequent contributor to the Houston Chronicle. He’s passionate about making cardiac science accessible and actionable.
