KMA President Evelyn Montgomery Jones, M.D., served as one of two dermatologists providing free skin cancer screenings during the Skin Cancer Foundation’s “Destination Healthy Skin” RV tour across the U.S. during their stop in Paducah on Monday, Nov. 18.
This marked the first time the tour bus, which travels across the country each year, has made a stop in Kentucky. Dr. Montgomery Jones screened nearly 40 individuals in just three hours, and made several findings of potential melanomas or sarcomas. Another Paducah dermatologist, KMA member Hal Ford, M.D., followed Dr. Montgomery Jones’ shift and checked an additional 33 patients.
Dr. Montgomery Jones was interviewed by WPSD Channel 6 during the event, which drew one of the largest crowds of the tour. It was hosted by the McCracken County Public Library.
Dr. Montgomery Jones will spearhead the KMA and KFMC’s upcoming public health campaign, “Small STEPS, Big Impact,” which includes a focus on receiving all recommended health screenings, including those for skin cancer.
“Getting screened for skin cancer is one of many ‘small steps’ we are encouraging Kentuckians to take throughout this new campaign. I know the people who attended today are leaving with peace of mind or a plan of action, and we want that for all of our patients,” said Dr. Montgomery Jones.
