President’s Message: A Year of Impact

As I prepare to conclude my term as President of the Kentucky Medical Association (KMA), I find myself reflecting with tremendous gratitude on this past year. Serving as your President has been one of the greatest honors of my professional career, and I am sincerely thankful for the confidence you placed in me to lead this remarkable organization.

When I first assumed this role, I shared my belief that physicians have an extraordinary ability to make a difference, not only in the exam room, but also in our communities and across the state. Throughout this year, I have had the privilege of seeing that belief demonstrated time and time again through the dedication, compassion, and leadership of KMA members across Kentucky.

Together, we have celebrated the impact physicians make every day through our Small STEPS, Big Impact initiative. What began as a public health campaign encouraging Kentuckians to take small, manageable steps toward better health has grown into a movement with a bigger impact than we could have imagined. Through physician-led public service announcements, digital outreach, earned media, continuing medical education, and community engagement, we have reached millions of Kentuckians with trusted, evidence-based health information.

While the campaign’s numbers are certainly impressive, what means the most to me is what those numbers represent- patients scheduling preventive screenings, families making healthier lifestyle choices, physicians engaging with their communities, and the public hearing directly from the professionals they trust most. They represent Kentucky physicians extending their influence beyond the walls of their practices to improve the health of our entire Commonwealth.

This year has also reinforced another lesson that has been central to my own leadership journey: leadership matters.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to participate in the Kentucky Physicians Leadership Institute, an experience that profoundly shaped my perspective on leadership and service. KPLI taught me that leadership is not reserved for those with titles. It is a skill that can be learned, developed, and strengthened through relationships, collaboration, and a willingness to step outside our comfort zones.

That experience prepared me for the privilege of serving as your President, and it continues to remind me that our profession’s future depends on physicians who are willing to lead. I encourage every physician who has considered KPLI to take that next step. Our Association, and our patients, will be stronger because of it.

As I look ahead to this weekend’s KMA Annual Meeting, I hope many of you will join us as we celebrate another successful year, recognize the outstanding achievements of our colleagues, and look toward the future of our Association. The Annual Meeting is always one of my favorite opportunities to connect with fellow physicians from across the Commonwealth, learn from one another, and strengthen the relationships that make KMA so special. If you haven’t registered yet, there’s still time, and I sincerely hope to see you there.

None of the accomplishments of this past year would have been possible without the extraordinary people who make KMA what it is. I want to thank our Board of Trustees, committee members, physician leaders, and the exceptional KMA staff for their work and commitment to our mission. I am also particularly grateful to the many physicians who volunteered as Small STEPS, Big Impact Physician Ambassadors, sharing their expertise and helping amplify the trusted voice of medicine throughout Kentucky.

Most importantly, I want to thank each of you: our members. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. Thank you for your commitment to your patients, your communities, and one another. Your dedication inspires me every day, and it has been a privilege to represent you during this past year.

As I pass the gavel to Dr. Christine Ko, I do so with great confidence in the future of our Association. I know she will lead with a vision and enthusiasm for Kentucky physicians and patients, and I am excited to see where the year takes us.

Although my term as President is coming to an end, my commitment to KMA and to each of you remains as strong as ever. I look forward to continuing our work together as we advocate for our profession, improve the health of our communities, and strengthen the future of medicine in Kentucky.

Thank you again for the honor of serving as your President. It has been a year I will always cherish.
