Treatment Approaches and Addressing Stigma for Eating Disorders: A Two-Part Series

Course Description:

This activity will address the importance of recognition, diagnosis and treatment of eating disorders.  Education will also focus on current treatment protocols including counseling, psychotherapy and inpatient treatment.

Statement of Need:  The Kentucky Eating Disorder Council estimates state that approximately nine percent of Kentuckians – 393,345 people – will have an eating disorder in their lifetime; and statistics show that 10,200 deaths occur each year in the United States that are the direct result of an eating disorder – equaling one death every fifty-two minutes.

Approximately twenty-six percent of people with an eating disorder attempts suicide and eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose.  There are limited treatment options in Kentucky due to inconsistent insurance coverage for both inpatient and outpatient services.

A knowledge and competency need, along with a performance in practice need exists to enable physicians with tools and approaches to care and recognition.

  • Learn the criteria for hospitalization and treatment options with a collaborative model.
  • Identify weight stigma and explore a weight inclusive environment.
  • Describe approaches to communicating with patients.
