KMA Past President Brent Wright, M.D., was recently featured in a short video highlighting the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky, KMA, and KFMC’s partnership on the Tobacco-Free for Students campaign.
The effort, launched in 2019, provided new, free signage to school districts across the state who agreed to comply with the tobacco free schools law passed during the 2019 legislative session. Prior to the passage of the law and the signage campaign, 42 percent of Kentucky’s 172 school districts had voluntarily adopted tobacco-free campus policies. Within a year, 95 school districts adopted the new policies, bringing the total number of tobacco-free schools across the state to 97 percent.
Overall, the partnership gave Kentucky school districts 1,540 metal property entrance signs, 1,693 metal signs for outdoor facility fences, 3,674 window stickers for school building doors, and 4,887 bus window stickers. In addition, the campaign gave school districts 20,223 small cards with a reminder of the new tobacco-free campus policy that districts could hand out in car pool lines and at school events.
