April 2023 President’s Message: Being a Lifelong Learner

“Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” -William Butler Yeats

At the end of my medical training, like many of you, I was thrilled to have my “formal” education years behind me. I could finally begin my life and career without thinking in terms of semesters, exams, and presentations. However, what I’ve learned over my years in practice is that as physicians, our learning does not end, it changes. We learn from our patients about conditions, we learn new medications and procedures, or now, AI and its uses. That doesn’t even touch on maintenance of certification.

This month, I have personally taken part in the Louisville Fitness Passport Challenge. For the third year in a row, eleven different exercise studios have offered a “passport” program which allows participants to take a class at each studio and receive a stamp on their passport after each visit. It’s been incredibly fun to not only meet new people, but to learn new exercises and fitness routines like boxing, cycling, and yoga. It’s been good for both the body and brain!

In addition, last week, nearly 100 of you joined me for the latest in my series “Learn With Me” for a CME webinar with Dr. Greg Cooper on the treatment of dementia. I was fascinated by not only the information shared, but by the honest and curious questions asked by so many of you, which kept the conversation going. In medicine, there will always be more questions to be answered and discoveries yet to be found, and I was thrilled to facilitate such an engaging learning opportunity with so many other physicians. I hope you’ll join me for our next “Learn With Me” session in June on geriatrics.

My “Learn With Me” series is part of KMA’s new CME Guarantee program, which allows all KMA members to receive access to at least 30 hours of Category I Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit each three-year cycle at no cost.

The “CME Guarantee” program allows members to gain education on a wide range of topics, including mandatory licensure requirements, up-to-date clinical guidance, and professional development through a catalog of virtual enduring material. Members can simply log in to their account at kyma.org/CMEGuarantee to access the material. KMA will also keep track of the CME each member completes through the program.

I’d encourage you to take advantage of this program and check out the various offerings KMA has provided and register for some of our upcoming live events. An updated listing is always available in each issue of Kentucky Health eNews as well as on the KMA website at kyma.org/events. You will need to log in using your member ID and password to access the material.

Finally, please save-the-date for KMA’s biggest learning event of the year, the KMA Annual Meeting, which will be held Aug. 25-27 at the Louisville Marriott East. This year in particular, KMA will present its “Meet the Mandates” education sessions, which allow physicians to obtain all state-mandated CME before the end of the three-year cycle at no cost. Live and enduring material options will be provided.

I hope each of you find joy in something that continues to teach you new things. I know learning is one way I’ve been able to “rejuvenate medicine” for myself.
