The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is issuing a Health Alert Network (HAN) Health Advisory regarding the first confirmed case of clade 1 mpox in the United States. Kentucky is actively preparing for the possibility of clade 1 cases, but at this time, the risk of clade 1 mpox to the general public remains low. However, clade 2b continues to circulate within Kentucky.
Since the beginning of the clade 2b mpox outbreak in the spring of 2022, Kentucky has reported a total of 120 cases, with no fatalities. Recently, there has been a slight uptick in cases, with seven new cases reported between August and October 2024. The majority of these recent cases have been concentrated in Jefferson County and its surrounding areas. Given the increased spread of the virus, we strongly encourage health care providers to encourage individuals who are high-risk for mpox to take the following precautions:
- Ensure individual has received two doses of JYNNEOS vaccine. JYNNEOS vaccine is available at many commercial pharmacies.
- Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with individuals who have a rash that resembles mpox or with animals that may be carrying the virus.
- Encourage individuals to seek testing for mpox if they develop a rash that is consistent with the symptoms of the virus.
By taking these steps, individuals can reduce the risk of transmission and help protect themselves and others from mpox. If you suspect a patient may have mpox, please follow the appropriate testing guidelines and procedures for submitting mpox specimens. Specimens can be sent to the Kentucky Division of Lab Services (DLS) with prior approval. It is essential to obtain a thorough patient history, including any recent travel. If you suspect Clade 1 mpox, please contact the The Kentucky Department for Public Health directly at 888-9REPORT (888-973-7678) for further assistance.
