President’s Message: A Season of Gratitude and Purpose

As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, I find myself reflecting not only on the many blessings in my personal life, but also on the extraordinary privilege we as physicians share in serving the people of Kentucky. Gratitude is often expressed in grand gestures, but in medicine, it is found in the quiet, everyday moments: the reassurance offered during a difficult diagnosis, the relief in a patient’s eyes after a successful procedure, or the trust families place in us when they are searching for answers. These moments remind us why our work matters and why the calling of medicine is unlike any other.

This month, I want to extend my deepest thanks to each of you. Your dedication and involvement sustains our communities, strengthens our healthcare system, and inspires the next generation of Kentucky physicians. At a time when the demands on our profession continue to evolve, whether through workforce shortages, shifting payment models, regulatory challenges, or the ongoing need for more public health education, you continue to lead with skill, compassion, and resilience.

That spirit of service is also at the heart of our Small STEPS, Big Impact public health campaign, which is wrapping up a very successful first year. The campaign focuses on five simple, preventive steps that can make a profound difference in the health of Kentuckians: Screenings, Tobacco cessation, Exercise and nutrition, Physician visits, and Stress management. These are small actions, but, like the daily efforts we make as physicians, they can add up to transformative results.

Earlier this month, we hosted a call with our dedicated group of STEPS Physician Ambassadors, who provided excellent dialogue that I know will lead to another successful year as we plan for our 2026 campaign. I am grateful for their role in amplifying our efforts, whether through signing on to our op-eds, being featured in public service announcements, or serving as speakers during our CME events.

Thanksgiving also invites us to reflect on the progress we’ve made together as an association. KMA’s advocacy efforts continue to advocate for policies that support physicians, reduce administrative burdens, and protect patients and the practice of medicine. I was so proud to watch our KFMC President, Dr. Shawn Jones, as he testified on our STEPS campaign before the Make America Healthy Again Kentucky Task Force on Nov. 5. Dr. Jones did an excellent job of communicating not only about the success of our initiative, but about how physicians are leading the way to improve health outcomes in our state.

As we close out 2025 and look ahead to a new year, I am filled with appreciation for our Kentucky Medical Association. Thank you for the countless ways you contribute, not only to your patients, but to the betterment of healthcare throughout Kentucky. I hope this season brings you rest, joy, and meaningful time with loved ones.

On behalf of the KMA, I wish you and your families a warm and grateful Thanksgiving.
