Statement of Need:
Kentucky continues to experience one of the nation’s highest rates of child maltreatment. In federal fiscal year 2024, 14,505 Kentucky children were identified as victims of abuse or neglect—a rate of 14.1 per 1,000 children, nearly twice the national rate of 7.2 per 1,000. Although the number of identified victims declined 13% between 2020 and 2024, Kentucky still ranked fifth highest nationally, and young children remain particularly vulnerable.

Objectives:
- Define and describe the injuries involved in Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma.
- Recognize common early warning signs of physical abuse.
- Be able to recognize the indications for a complete occult trauma evaluation.
- Be able to document clearly and in detail when physical abuse is suspected.
- Define and comprehend the mandatory reporting laws in Kentucky as it pertains to medical providers.
- Cite 2 ways providers can help prevent pediatric abusive head trauma and child physical abuse in their interactions with children and their caregivers.
