Kentucky Department for Public Health Confirms Measles Case in Central Kentucky

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) issued a Health Alert regarding a confirmed case of measles in an adult resident of Central Kentucky who recently returned from international travel. This is the first confirmed case of measles in a Kentucky resident since February 2023. KDPH is working with local health departments to identify and contact individuals who may have been exposed. This comes amid a rise in cases of measles globally and domestically, including a large ongoing outbreak in Texas and New Mexico. KDPH can confirm that this case is not related to that outbreak.

The health alert contains detailed guidance for healthcare providers on clinical recognition and diagnosis, laboratory testing, infection prevention and control, and public health reporting of suspected measles cases. Please share this health alert widely with healthcare partners in your jurisdictions. Additional resources can be found on the KDPH measles website.

This press release with talking points is for your internal use.

The KDPH encourages health care providers to reach out with any questions or concerns.
