On June 30, Kentucky health officials announced a measles outbreak that began in Woodford County had spread to Fayette County. As of July 3, there are currently five measles cases in Kentucky, four of which are connected to the outbreak. The fifth case, located in Todd County, appears to be unrelated to the Woodford and Fayette County cases. All five cases were unvaccinated against measles. Health officials are working to identify people who may have been exposed in order to limit further spread. Updated information about measles cases in Kentucky can be found on the Kentucky Department for Public Health Measles website. These investigations are ongoing and there are likely to be community exposures and additional cases.
The Kentucky Department for Public Health has put together helpful measles clinical guidance documents to help guide decision-making in clinical settings: “When Measles is Suspected,” “When to Test for Measles,” and “Measles FAQs.” Additionally, the CDC offers a comprehensive toolkit with additional materials CDC Measles Toolkit.
