KMA Continuing Push to “Reform Prior Auth”

Although House Bill 134, a KMA priority bill on prior authorization exemption, did not pass the General Assembly this session, streamlining and reforming prior authorization continues to be a major focus of KMA’s advocacy efforts.

Last week, KMA Executive Vice President Pat Padgett published an op-ed that has been picked up by newspapers statewide calling for prior authorization reform. The piece examines a ProPublica article that describes the delays and denials that result from the process at Cigna. The op-ed, entitled “Ten seconds or less: Health insurers use prior authorizations to delay and deny care” can be viewed here.

During the 2023 session, KMA’s “Reform Prior Auth” awareness campaign produced advertisements that were shared on social media and streaming services. The ads feature KPLI graduates Casey Miles, M.D., and Christopher Jones, M.D., who discuss the negative impact of prior authorizations on patient care and safety. To date, the ads have generated more than 2.4 million impressions across all platforms and more than 2,400 clicks to ReformPriorAuth.org.
