January 2025 President’s Message: Stepping Into 2025

The start of the new year always brings about excitement, as we turn our calendars over to a fresh page and look toward new goals. 2025 is certainly no exception, and I’m thrilled to share what lies ahead for the KMA.

Last week, KMA and the KFMC officially launched our new two-year public health campaign, Small Steps, Big Impact. This initiative is designed to empower Kentuckians to take simple, actionable steps toward improving their health and well-being. As physicians, we know that even modest changes can lead to significant health benefits over time. With Small Steps, Big Impact, we aim to encourage individuals across the Commonwealth to embrace healthier lifestyles, one step at a time.

The campaign focuses on five key areas, which include Screenings, Tobacco use, Exercise and Nutrition, Physician visits, and Stress. Through targeted education, resources, and community outreach, we will address some of the most pressing health challenges facing our state, including chronic disease, obesity, and mental health disparities. For example, we’ll be encouraging routine checkups and screenings, promoting nutritious foods, highlighting the benefits of regular exercise, and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health care.

What makes this campaign truly special is the role you, our members, will play in its success. As trusted voices in your communities, you have the unique ability to inspire change at both the individual and systemic levels. Whether it’s sharing resources with your patients, attending our educational events, or collaborating with your colleagues, your involvement will be critical in amplifying the message of Small Steps, Big Impact.

This initiative also underscores our ongoing commitment to addressing Kentucky’s public health challenges head-on. While we have made significant progress in recent years, such as helping Kentucky soar to #2 in the country in lung cancer screening rates, there is still much work to be done. Kentucky currently ranks 41st in the nation in overall health, and the COVID-19 pandemic only further highlighted the importance of proactive health measures. Through Small Steps, Big Impact, we aim to build a culture of health and wellness that benefits all of our patients.

As we embark on this journey, I want to express my gratitude for your continued dedication and leadership. The strength of the KMA lies in its members, and your commitment to the practice of medicine and the health of our communities is inspiring. Together, we have the power to make a lasting difference. And we want to hear about the differences you are making. I would love it if you would share with us the “small steps” your patients have made toward better health via email or on KMA’s social media platforms.

I encourage each of you to learn more about Small Steps, Big Impact by visiting the campaign website, SmallStepsKY.org. Let’s make 2025 a year of continued progress as we work together to create a healthier Kentucky, one step at a time.

And of course if you haven’t already, please be sure to renew your KMA membership and encourage your colleagues to join us as well so that we can continue this important work.

Thank you for all that you do, and best wishes for a successful and fulfilling year ahead.
